Jo Gummer

I began riding at a young age showing Welsh ponies. As a teenager I developed an interest in schooling and retraining as a result of a wayward pony that I later qualified for the BRC National Championships and gained my first Affiliated points.

I partnered numerous failed Racehorses, Sovereign Rock and I competed in several Regional Championships working our way up through the levels. We competed in my first ever BD National Championship and took part in The Golden Jubilee celebration at Windsor.

I have bred, produced and trained a team of horses I’m very proud of and recently I have branded my breeding and training operations as Sovereign Sports in a nod to the great horses I have been delighted to know, train and compete. I have a broad experience in the Dressage Arena from Young Horse Championships to National Championships and Area Festival Finals to Premier League and High Profile Shows.

I purchased my first foal in 1998 and bred my first foal in 2008. There is a delightful symmetry for me in breeding, rearing, producing, training and competing with horses I have known and cared for their whole life. A 2015 Colt I foaled and produced,  passed his 2019 British Warmblood Stallion License with good marks for paces and conformation.  I enjoy giving horses variety in training, I showjump up to Newcomers level and regularly go drag hunting and team chasing to Intermediate level.

I am committed to my Continued Professional Development too. I graduated in 2000 from Nottingham Trent University with Bsc (hons) in Equine Science. I also hold the BHS Grooms Certificate and NVQ 3 with Coaching Certificate.

My Clients have qualified for Championships to Advanced Medium and PSG and have been placed at National Finals. I enjoy Coaching Riders of all ages and abilities to share insights into understanding our horses and building a great partnership with them.

Sovereign Sports Dressage Horses

Jo bred her first foal in 1988, Gironde sparked her interest in Breeding and was a Horse of a Lifetime. Gironde qualified for the Young Horse Championships including the Final of the Young Horse Evaluations held at The Horse of the Year Show (This is now the Futurity Series.) Gironde went to many Regional and National Championships, Area Festivals and Festival Finals up to and including Inter 1. He also successfully competed at Premier League and High Profile Shows. He won a Music Class at Inter 1 at a Premier League. Jo was devastated to lose him two years ago.

Jo has had success with a great team of horses at Regional and National Dressage Championships and was thrilled too to have been invited to viewing days for the World Class Programme.

Jo bred her first foal in 2008, a Hanoverian Filly Foal Classic Ruby who was sold to Karen Jones. Jo rode and produced Classic Ruby who achieved a Double High First Premium Futurity qualifying for the Finals. Later Jo qualified for numerous Regional Championships and Jo is  delighted that they are currently competing at Prix St George showing ability for the Grand Prix work.

Each of the foals Jo has bred has gained either Higher First or Elite Premiums at Futurity with wins and Premium Awards at Regional Hanoverian Foal shows. Sovereign Star Horses generally sell early on and often remain at the stud to be produced and trained as Jo has become known for her ability to start youngsters and continue with empathetic education as they mature to become competition horses. The Sovereign Star horses are well loved, handled and raised to give them a great foundation for a long term sporting career.

Sovereign Sports has  a great and varied team of horses at present and can showcase a stables from foals to full grown. Youngstock, Broodmares, Stallion Prospects and Competition horses, the broad range of horses means that Jo has a very busy diary yet still finds the time to make sure every step of the horse’s development is well thought out and unhurried. The Sovereign Sports horses are well produced, extremely well loved and exude personality and character!
